Community educational visits
Schools
HDC educators visit schools and daycare centers that have a child with type 1 diabetes. They provide teachers and support personnel important information about caring for children with diabetes, learning how to test blood sugars, inject insulin and treating hypoglycemia. Classmates are included in the education too, learning about diabetes, how good nutrition and exercise helps their classmate manage their diabetes, and how to identify the symptoms of hypoglycemia. Money from several grants support this important service.

Healthy Food & Fun Family Programs
Childhood obesity prevention programs are the newest of our services for children and families. These programs are aimed at children at risk for type 2 diabetes, which is directly linked to obesity. In the summer of 2006 we launched a series of "Healthy Food and Fun" diabetes prevention programs at seven city parks in the Treasure Valley where the Idaho Food Bank distributed free lunches. We will continue these programs this coming summer and hope to extend them to after-school programs if funding is available.
Service Groups
HDC educators often visit community service groups, providing important information about diabetes self-management and preventing diabetes. Visits are free of charge if the group is a non-profit. Fees apply for for-profit organizations. To schedule a community visit, please call (208) 331-1155 ext. 32 or schedule a community visit via email.
